DIY – natural mosquito candles

Find out here how to make your own citronella candles in eggshells, perfect for keeping mosquitoes away! With simple ingredients like soy wax, citronella oil and eggshells, you can turn kitchen scraps into charming candles for a mosquito-free summer evening on your terrace or in your garden. Follow these instructions and enjoy your homemade candles!

Supplies :

  • Eggs (as many as you need to make candles)
  • Lemongrass essential oil
  • Soy wax (or leftover candles)
  • Candle wicks
  • Frying pan and bowl (for melting in a bain-marie)
  • Toothpick (for holding wicks)

Steps :

  • Carefully break the top of the eggs with a knife, leaving a wide opening. Place the contents in a bowl and make a tasty omelette, for example.
  • Rinse the eggshells thoroughly with water and leave to dry.
  • Cut the strands so that they are slightly longer than the height of the shells.
  • Melt the soy wax (or leftover candle wax) in a bain-marie.
  • Once the wax has melted, add a little citronella oil.
  • Place the eggshells upright in an egg carton. Gently pour the melted wax into each shell, until they are three-quarters full.
  • While the wax is still liquid, place a wick in each eggshell. Make sure the wick stays straight by securing it with a toothpick on the eggshell.
  • Leave the candles to cool and harden completely. This usually takes a few hours, depending on the ambient temperature.
  • Once the candles are completely hardened, cut the excess wick to an appropriate length.

Columbus tip

Add food coloring to the wax to give your waxes to your candles.
