Why is the yolk of Columbus eggs pale?

Why is the yolk of Columbus eggs paler than many other eggs?

As you might have noticed, the colour of egg yolks can vary greatly. In fact, the colour depends on what the hen is fed. For example, a hen fed maize, which is often the case, will lay eggs with a dark, even orange like, yolk.
At Columbus, we deliberately limit the amount of maize, which is rich in omega-6, in our hens’ feed. Instead, we favour foods rich in omega-3, which is much better for our health.
The colour of our egg yolks is therefore paler, because the colouring agent naturally present in maize is virtually absent in the feed given to our hens, and no colour additives are add to make the yolks more colourful.
But much more than the appearance of the yolk, it’s the nutritional value of the egg that varies depending on what the hens are fed. At Columbus, the hens are fed a varied, 100% plant-based feed specially designed for Columbus eggs. It’s a balanced mix of various seeds (wheat, flax) and legumes, rich in vitamins and minerals.
Thanks to this 100% plant-based recipe, developed in collaboration with the University of Liège, Columbus eggs naturally have 15 times more omega-3 than other eggs, 60% more vitamin B12… but a paler yolk.
