From the egg of Columbus to the Columbus egg
Traditionally set on the second Monday of October, Columbus Day, celebrating the discovery of the New World, is celebrated in many countries: Spain, Latin America and the USA.
In addition to the discovery of the United States, we owe Columbus the expression “the egg of Columbus”.
What does the ‘egg of Columbus’ mean?
The expression ‘Columbus’ egg’ is used to refer to a simple but ingenious idea.
At a dinner attended by Columbus, a man is said to have said of the discovery of the New World, “All you had to do was think about it”. Columbus replied by suggesting that each guest could try to make a hard-boiled egg stand up. No one succeeded, except Columbus, who crushed the base of the egg a little. He then said: “All you had to do was think about it”.
And what is the Columbus egg?
It is also a simple and ingenious idea. At Columbus, we feed our chickens the best possible diet, consisting of a balanced mix of various grains, seeds and legumes. The benefits of this recipe are naturally found in our Columbus eggs with unique nutritional qualities, including more omega-3 and less saturated fatty acids than any other egg. This allows Columbus eggs to have a positive effect on cholesterol.
As Columbus said, “it was enough to think of it”.
