Columbus s’commits

Our story

The history of Columbus finds its source in that of the Belovo company. Belovo was founded in 1967 by the De Meester family, based in Bastogne, a family active in the egg trade since 1920.

At the end of 1973, a new production site appeared in Waregem, where fresh shell eggs were packaged for supermarkets and fresh produce wholesalers.

As early as 1997, the famous Columbus recipe appeared on the market: eggs, laid by hens whose 100% vegetable food was developed by Fabien De Meester in collaboration with the University of Liège and the family food company animal Vanden Avenne. These unique cholesterol-lowering eggs may hold the promise of a real health benefit.

In 2019, Vincent Poujardieu, with extensive international experience in the field of nutrition and health, bought Belovo. This takeover breathes new life into the company, which is focusing on its real area of expertise: the egg. The Columbus brand is refocusing on health benefits while being a responsible and committed player, concerned about animal well-being and its impact on society and our planet.

Thus, wishing to reflect these values, Columbus has changed the image of its logo and reviewed the design of all its packaging. Columbus has also launched an organic egg rich in omega-3 meeting its demanding specifications in terms of health performance. For this, it was necessary to work hand in hand with professors and researchers. A real feat in terms of development, which makes the organic Columbus egg the first truly healthy organic egg and the only one on the Belgian market to benefit from a nutriscore A.

Who are we?

Columbus is a small team of committed, complementary and flexible people, working hand in hand, in a spirit of complicity, almost family. We always try to have a responsible attitude in everything we do.

Columbus is also a network of local breeders, proud of their profession, concerned about the well-being of their hens and their impact on the environment. We develop a relationship with them based on trust. In return for demanding specifications, we offer long-term contracts and fair compensation that allows them to live with dignity from their work.

Columbus also means long-term relationships with Belgian and Luxembourg retailers, Belgian universities or local players in the agri-food chain such as cereal producers or animal feed manufacturers.

Columbus is a Belgian company, active on the Belgian and Luxembourg markets.

Our eggs are always laid locally and we work exclusively with Belgian farmers located throughout Belgium for sales in Belgium and with Luxembourg farmers for our sales in the Grand Duchy.

The Columbus egg credo: eat well, live well

Eggs are a basic ingredient in our diet, a food that must be accessible to everyone.

Our Columbus eggs are unanimously recognized by nutrition professionals to be good for everyone’s health. They are also delicious and acclaimed by many Belgian chefs.

At Columbus, like Hippocrates, we believe that “we are what we eat”, and therefore that eating well is living well.

TO BE RESPONSIBLE

FROM OUR CHICKENS TO FARMERS…

…AND NOT FORGETTING OUR PLANET!

At Columbus, the chickens will be respected!

Columbus offers breeders a long-term partnership

  • Chez Columbus, nous voulons travailler avec les meilleurs éleveurs qui se soucient non seulement de la qualité des œufs pondus ou du bien-être de leurs poules, mais aussi de l’impact de leur activité sur l’environnement.
  • We offer our farmers a fair remuneration that allows them to live with dignity from their work. By paying a fair price, we also commit ourselves to a long-term partnership in a relationship based on trust. This is also being responsible.
  • At Columbus, we help young farmers get started by offering multi-year contracts that enable them to obtain bank financing.

Testimony of Sebastiaan, one of the breeders of Columbus

Sebastiaan, a veterinarian by training, is a chicken breeder and organic egg producer for Columbus.

He explains his own vision of his profession and the reasons behind his partnership with Columbus.

I am a laying hens farmer. I produce organic eggs for the Columbus brand.

As a veterinarian, the health of our laying hens and animal welfare are two points that are very important for me. I appreciate the partnership with Columbus because they pay very much attention to this point.

Within the collaboration with Columbus, we contribute to producing local food, which I like very much because we contribute to sustainability.

Columbus respects our profession by paying fair and correct prices and by offering solid contracts. I am very proud to contribute to the production of the best eggs on the Belgium market.

Being responsible also means being involved in charity work

At Columbus, we are aware of the ever-increasing number of people who have to rely on charities to provide them with enough to eat.

We are happy to be able to contribute in our own way and enable many people to benefit from healthy and balanced food.

For example, every month we donate around 15,000 eggs to the Belgian Federation of Food Banks, which fights hunger in Belgium and with which we have established a long-term partnership.
